Weather is looking toasty for Monday.

Be sure to tuck a few bucks in your spandex as we will try to find a stop for refreshments. Also bring your state issue ID since cycling makes us all look so youthful and you may be asked to prove you are old enough for a cold beverage.

PS - the ride leaves on time and since there are no maps you will be on your own. That means tires pumped, helmet on, shoes clipped in and ready to roll out of the parking lot at 9:00am sharp.

Touring / MMT #1 ~ May 28 ~ 9:00am ~ Woodlan HS
« on: May 20, 2012, 09:34:16 PM »
The inaugural Magical Mystery Tour will take place:
Memorial Day, Monday, May 28th at 9:00am
starting at:
Woodlan Junior/Senior High School
17215 Woodburn Road, Woodburn, IN

The distance will be about 50 miles and the route will meander along the Maumee river.

Be sure to read both of the articles linked above. There will be no maps provided so you should have enough miles in your legs this season to hang with the group at a reasonable pace. Paceline and drafting skills are expected.

Come join the fun!

Touring / Re: Nice ride yesterday
« on: May 14, 2012, 10:09:16 PM »
Happened again last weekend on the ride to Ashley, 3 riders (me) turned right following the map as the "pack" just kept going north.  Yelled out..."Right turn!" to no avail.  We three then had to hammer to catch up to the pack.

Jeff, a couple things happened in Auburn on that ride. The lead riders were not reading the map. As I recall the road we were supposed to turn on north of Auburn is shown on the map as CR40 while I believe the street sign says Morningstar.

While the turn may have been missed I think the correct approach was taken:

1) When riding follow the group, do not make a turn that the lead riders did not signal and make. The danger that exist is riders beside or behind you may follow the lead riders while you are turning. This creates a potential for overlapped wheels and a crash.

2) The road we were riding on was a bit busy and trying to get all the riders to make a U-Turn just to get back to a misssed turn would have been more dangerous than simply proceeding forward.

3) Continuing straight was going to reconnect us with the route and allow us to head on north to Ashley.

4) While the Garmin's may be useful tools for some they are not foolproof and should not overide safe decisions or personal knowledge of roads that the computer directs you to follow.

With regards to the insurance, it is designed as a supplement and not a replacement for carrying appropriate primary care insurance. While nice to have I am not going to make unsafe moves simply to adhere to some map to qualify for supplemental insurance.

Touring / Re: Reverse Route?
« on: May 09, 2012, 02:40:56 PM »
I like the route but would suggest doing it in reverse:
  • Straight west on 400S you get a cross headwind  rather than a direct NW headwind.
  • Defers crossing US30 until later in the evening after some of the motor traffic has died down.
  • Angle of Old Trail means motorist do not have setting sun directly in their eyes.
  • If there is a mechanical or slower rider they can cut the route short before sunset by returning to Arcola on Felger Road.

Touring / Show N Go
« on: October 31, 2011, 01:07:40 PM »
The regular touring rides have ended and the Show N Go schedules begins this weekend. The schedule for November and December can be found by following the link on the main page of the website at:

http://3rvs.com/joomla15/touring/show-n-go.html

I cannot overemphasize the fact that these rides leave on time at noon. Be sure you have all your cold weather gear packed and allow extra time to bundle up in the parking lot. You don't want to watch the group ride away as you search for that elusive left shoe cover you have not used for the last seven months.

Additional information with regards to the Show N Go rides is in the article posted here:

http://3rvs.com/joomla15/Latest-News/show-n-go-information.html

Note that I will not be there to lead the rides on the first weekend but keeping with the theme of the Show N Go rides... whoever shows up determines the make up of that days ride.

Too late for me to train for Hilly. Anyone wanting to do a ride longer than 10 miles see me Saturday at Roanoke and we will discuss an optional route and distance for Sunday.

Touring / Re: Learning to ride properly in a group
« on: September 07, 2011, 12:55:27 PM »
I like how the one guy in the comment section described how poorly his local club does group rides.

Quote
I miss riding with guys who knew what they were doing. The beautiful wagon wheel with 10-30 second pulls was a work of art, and safe. Now the group ride is more like a 16 year old learning to drive a clutch for the first time.

Sadly the observation in most of the comments was the people who need to learn how to ride in a group will read the article and never really understand it. They will just look at the computer on their handlebars and be mesmerized like a little kid sitting in front of a TV screen watching cartoons.

Just this weekend I was thinking the only thing I would miss from the old Forum was this link. Then I went on a CIBA club ride and realized without the video I could still relive the experience IRL.
