Touring / May 9th Arcola ride
« on: May 08, 2012, 03:19:22 PM »
The weather forecast suggests a NW wind - meaning a ride to Columbia City.  To attain at least 25 miles, the ride will start by heading east on Arcola Rd to O'Day Rd, turning left and riding to Leesburg Rd and turning left again.  Leesburg becomes Old Trail on the north side of US 30.  Then, Old Trail to Hartman and a ride back on Raber Rd. before turning left on 400S and heading back to Arcola.

Touring / May 2nd Arcola ride
« on: May 01, 2012, 12:08:38 PM »
I am working Wednesday evening and will not be able to attend the ride.  The wind is suppose to be from the south and a ride to Roanoke is best.  A good 30 mile route is west on Arcola Rd. to Whitley 400S.  Turn left on 500E and ride several miles until reaching 900N in Huntington Co.  Turn left and ride into Roanoke.  Turn left again and the Park (down slope of hill).  This street turns into 600E in outside of town.  Ride several miles until reaching 400S and turn right to get back to Arcola.

Touring / Wednesday, April 18th ride
« on: April 16, 2012, 01:39:07 PM »
The Wednesday evening Saturn Ride will start at Arcola (6pm) until 800S is repaired.  This week, the wind is forecast to blow from the south meaning a ride to Roanoke.  I am still feeling out the mileage for each destination.  Roanoke should be approx. 30 miles.  The route will start by heading out Arcola Rd to 400S in Whitley Co. and then turning south on Raber Rd., heading to Roanoke.  The return is the usual way except continuing on 500E past 800S (the old brick school) and heading back to 400S, turning right and returning on the outbound route.

Touring / Saturn Ride - Wednesday April 11th
« on: April 06, 2012, 01:44:34 PM »
The Wednesday evening Saturn Ride begins on the 11th.  There is a complication.  Whitley Co. 800S (Saturn Church is on 800S) is still gravel and dirt and no word yet on when the road will be resurfaced.

So, I have decided to move the ride to Arcola Elementary school until 800S is repaired.  Roanoke and Columbia City are still the destinations.  Arcola Rd. makes for a nice gateway into Whitley Co.  The start time is still the same, 6pm.  I hope to see many of the same faces that have made this club ride an enjoyable experience.

Touring / Re: New Dog in Town
« on: February 29, 2012, 03:48:01 PM »
Yesterday, February 28th, I had another encounter with the dog at Parent and Bruick Rd.  As I was heading west, the Australian Cattle Dog ran from the house on the southeast corner of the intersection down on the pavement and began barking and baring it's teeth at me.  I was ready with a can of Direct Spray - which I used to varying degrees of success.  The dog circled around the spray and kept chase until I crossed to the other side of the intersection.

When I finished my ride, I called the Allen Co. Sheriff's Animal Control office  to report the incident.  I received a follow up call that evening and the officer stated he would go to the house with my complaint.  He also suggested I use Pepper Spray with the intend of spraying the dog's muzzle.  This would give the desired affect of stopping the dog's chase.  In 15 years as an officer in the department, he has used Pepper Spray with great success.  He stated that only twice has the spray not worked - both times on extremely aggressive/agitated dogs.

I ride this area on a semi-regular basis and hope this "New Dog in Town" is dealt with in a quick manner, preferably put behind a fenced enclosure.

Touring / New Dog in Town
« on: January 11, 2012, 10:20:29 PM »
While riding Parent Road last Saturday, I encountered a "new dog in town".  He lives in the green house on the corner of Bruick and Parent Road east of New Haven.  The Australian Cattle Dog came up from behind me and chased me for 150 or so yards while baring his teeth and barking.  He was right next to my pedal and front tire pushing me over to other side of the road.

I rode the same stretch yesterday (Tuesday) and heard him barking at me from inside the house as I passed.  No doubt, this dog will be a nuisance as long as he is allowed to be outside and untethered.

Touring / Re: 2011 Mileage-What is yours?
« on: January 11, 2012, 05:03:31 PM »
I managed to finish off December with a flurry of small rides up to New Year's eve.  Final 2011 tally:  5,180 miles.  The weather has also granted me the opportunity to ride a few times in the first 10 days of January.  I didn't let the odometer rest at zero for too long - several thousand miles to go.
