Touring / Re: Chilly Challenge Trivia
« on: December 17, 2012, 03:33:42 AM »
I remember sitting in Kathi's kitchen with Phil discussing plans for the first Chilly Challenge. Having the ride here was fairly controversial at the time, and there were some hard feelings from the folks who put on the original Polar Bear ride. We weren't sure how many riders would be crazy enough to come out, but we were thinking maybe 25 or so. We were in for a surprise!

As the cars kept coming and coming to the parking lot at Franke, it was obvious that the one (or two, I forget) pot(s) of chili weren't going to be enough to feed everybody. Fortunately Karen Walker was there, and she and some others drove down to Wendy's and bought additional chili to feed the hordes. It was a cold day, but everyone was happy with the chili being served from the back of Stan's pickup.

The other vivid memory I have was when we had the first Chilly Challenge Chili Cookoff at Psi Ote Barn. I was a judge, along with Cheryl Mathews and another woman, I forget her name. But she insisted that we "clean our palettes" by eating a cracker and drinking some water between contestant chili's. There were 26 pots of chili I believe. By the time we got to 15 or so, I had abandoned the cracker and water nonsense so I wouldn't explode. Winners were decided, and I didn't eat chili for another year.

It's been several years since I've ridden on the ride, but Kathi and I usually show up on the Harley before we head out to the Park. It's our tradition now. So if you're looking for us, we'll be on the side of the hill in leathers watching with our (other) fellow riders.

Touring / Show and go - December 15 time change
« on: December 14, 2012, 03:25:54 PM »
Show N Go !!!TIME CHANGE!!!

Saturday 12/15 Homestead HS at 10:00am (TIME CHANGE!!!)

Sunday 12/16 Homestead HS at noon (regular start time)

The forecast for Saturday indicates a good chance of rain Saturday afternoon. So the ride will be moved up to 10:00am to try and beat the rain. Depending on how the sky looks we may stay closer and do some shorter loops near Homestead so we can get back quickly if the sky starts to fall. Hopefully we can still get a two hour ride in.

As always, these rides leave on time so be ready to roll out of the parking lot.

Latest News / REGISTRATIONS DISABLED
« on: November 12, 2012, 06:31:58 PM »
Due to the large increase in spam registrations, porn forum posts, and now UFO posts, I have decided to disable new registrations until further notice.

If you are currently a forum member you can still use the forum. If you are not a member of the forum but would like to be, please send me an email. My email address is webmaster at 3rvs dot com.

This is not the first time I've had to do this. Perhaps I will open registrations again in 2013. Or not.

Thank you for understanding.

I got a pretty good warning from one today. I heard it yell at me, but didn't realize what it was until a few seconds later. Same place, Wallen Rd. right around Center St., about 1/4 mile west of Lima Rd.

Touring / July 4 ride map
« on: June 14, 2012, 12:20:39 AM »
As related by Steve Pequignot:

We will use one of the five routes on this map during the July 4th tour. The actual route used will be based on riders' input the day of the tour, as it will be a riders choice event. We may, or may not use this map again this year, based on riders' input. Therefore, it is not necessary to post the route on the website. Do so only if you feel it is appropriate for a one-time event.

Latest News / Re: A rider's feedback -
« on: May 18, 2012, 02:19:56 AM »
The only reason I posted the (now deleted) email that I, along with several club officers, received from Grant is because I think that it is important for the club to understand how they are perceived by others in the local community. Someone in the local community, who is involved enough with cycling in Fort Wayne to attend the press conference, was disturbed enough to send individual emails to several officers, and me.  As a club member for over 32 years, I was troubled that someone would have this perception of 3RVS.

I thought that the forum is a place where these issues could be discussed openly. It should be. Apparently it is not.

I deleted the original email, and Patrick's reply.

Feedback I received from someone at the news conference today. Before reacting, you should consider Grant's message:

Hi Jeff - that damn radar gets me some times, even though I say I'm not going to pay any attention to it. I went to the first 101 Lakes ride and the sags really sucked then too. I thought they would have sorted that out by now. For $35 entry fee, and with the many, many sponsors that the ride has you would think they would have better sags. I guess I won't bother with them next year either.

I really don't have any answers to your questions about your various scenarios, who is covered, who is not. Ernie provides all the answers at the club meetings, yet questions continue. Like whether or not I would have been covered when I took my detour. The answer is probably no. Yet, when the group goes on its own detour, off the approved map, I'll bet you dollars to donuts that they would be covered. I guess the best advice is just to be "In With The In Crowd". ;)

I'm just going to ride my bike, hope for the best, and ignore the rest ;)

Touring / Nice ride yesterday
« on: May 13, 2012, 02:57:15 PM »
The weather was ? in Angola, so I did the weekend club ride from Homestead to Huntington on May 12. Nice group, old friends and others, nice quick pace going to Huntington into a cross-wind. At the left turn at 200E outside of Huntington I went straight instead, along the river and picked up Hosler and the way back.

The group ride back always kicks up in speed, so I dropped the group in favor of a modified route that saved me a couple miles and getting shelled out the back only to have a harder ride back. As it was, I had a nice tempo ride back and an overall very good ride. And quiet too, no screaming about "car back, coming around" and all that.

I guess the only problem would have been if I had an accident on those couple of miles when I was off the designated, approved route. I wouldn't have been covered by the club's insurance policy on that section. Oh, you didn't know about the club's insurance policy?

Going for a bike ride today with Sarah's mom on Mothers day...
