Three Rivers Velo Sport Team Repeats as National Bike Challenge Winners

Written by Amy Copeland - November 2016

amy copeland2With a rocky start in the month of May finishing up in 6th place overall and 2nd place just 1373 points behind the Mind Brain Social Club in the Extra Large team category, the team continued to build in numbers and momentum and never looked back. By the end of June the team had taken the overall lead for the extra large team and held it for the remainder of the challenge, which ended September 30th, finishing 77,506 points ahead of the 2nd place MBSC team. The 99 member 3RVS team also finished in 4th place overall nationally against the top three teams each having 273 to 443 members.

The team point leader for the year was Steve Pequignot with a total of 14,414 points followed by Jeff Kenny with 10,846. Both gentlemen earned the coveted double diamond status for being over 10,000 points. Jody Thomas rounded out the top 3 for the gentlemen with a diamond level showing of 9,062 points. The top three ladies were Amy Copeland with 6982 points, Denise Snider with 6,119 points and Jennifer Altherr with 6,046 points all earning the diamond level.

At the State level our very own Steve Pequignot came in 1st place overall, with Jeff Kenny, Jody Thomas and Russ Stephens also placing in the states top 10 overall finishers and top 10 male finishers. At state level the ladies also faired well in the ladies’s rankings with Amy Copeland placing 2nd, and Denise Snyder, Jennifer Altherr and Sue Rohling also in the top 10 ladies finishers.

Four team members managed to ride at least one mile all 153 days of the challenge and were Steve Pequignot, Russ Stephens, Nick Stauffer and Amy Copeland. Honorable mention goes out to Jeff Kenny, Jody Smith, Luis Deveyra for riding 152 days each. Overall the team performed well with two double diamond level riders (10,000+ points), 29 diamond level riders (5,000-9,999 points), 48 platinum level riders (2,500-4,999 points), and the remaining 20 riders all reaching the gold level (750-2,499 points).

Although only 71 team members claim Fort Wayne as their hometown for the challenge the riders helped to bring Fort Wayne to 14th place nationally in points right behind the much larger city of Indianapolis.

This year was also the 1st year for the 3RVS youth team. As a building year the team they finished with just 6 members. The team was lead in points by Kieran Stockman with 2,451 points, followed by Savannah Copeland, John Copeland, and Felicity Stockman. These four youth all achieved the gold level for this years challenge. The team was rounded out with Sebastian Schoeff and Marcus Snider. Our youth had a great first year.

Despite the slow start in getting the team filled and the troubles encountered with the NBC getting the newly rebuilt web site working, Three Rivers Velo Sport has much to be proud of this year when looking at their overall performance in this years National Bike Challenge. Is anyone looking for a three-peat in 2017 in the Extra Large Team category or shall we try our hand against the jumbo teams?
